Tiago Monteiro racing career is rather on the unique side because, he started his racing career at the same age that most of his rivals were preparing to take their final steps into Formula One.

 

In 1996, at the age of 20, Tiago paid, to visit the Paul Ricard circuit in France, with his father. While at the wet Paul Ricard circuit, Monteiro impressed his chaperon with his driving. As a result of that performance, his father enrolled his son into a competition.

 

His father had in fact entered Tiago into the 1997-Porsche Carrera Cup in France. He won the championship easily, winning five consecutive races and taking five consecutive pole positions he was also, rookie of the year. He also, got the chance to show off his talent to the Formula One bosses by driving in the Porsche Super Cup, which is one of the support races for the F1 Grand Prixs. 

 

In 1998 he competed in the French F3 Championships. He finished a disappointing twelfth in the Championship but, he took two fourth places at Paul Richard and Albi, this meant that he earn the rookie of the year award.

 

In 1999 he remained in the French F3 Championship and improved to finish sixth in the Championship with, one win and three other podiums. Monteiro also, competed in the Le Mans 24-hours and finished 16th overall and sixth in the GT2 class. He was also, raced in the International Renault Finals in Estoril. He took pole position, set the fast lap and won the race.

 

In 2000, Monteiro raced in the French F3 Championship and finished as runner up in the Championship, with four wins. He also competed in several rounds of the Lamborghini Super Trophy; he set the fastest lap at Magny-Cours and started from pole position at Laguna Seca.

 

In 2001, he once again compete in the French F3 Championship, and once again he finished as runner up, despite taking six pole positions and four wins. He also raced in the French GT Championships and took two wins.

 

In 2002, Monteriro participate in the F3000 International Championship, with Super Nova. He finished twelfth in the Championship and had five top ten finishes. He also tested for Renault F1 Team, as he was part of their junior team.

 

In 2003, Monteriro moved to the United States and competed in the Champ Car World Series, he finished fifteenth overall and took pole position in the Mexico Grand Prix and had five top ten finishes.

 

In 2004, he moved back to Europe and contested in the Nissan World Series and finished as runner up, despite taking five wins, four pole positions and seven podiums. He was also did a test drive for Minardi.

 

Following the buy out of Jordan by Alex Shnaider and his Midland F1 Team, There were rumours flying around saying, that Monteiro would be driving for Shnaider in 2005. And on 3rd February the rumours were confirmed.

 

Since then Monteiro, has been the strongest and most consistent of the rookies. That consistency has paid off for the Portuguese driver, in the ninth round at Indianapolis he followed the Ferraris home to take his first Formula One podium and his skill of bringing the car home safely has meant that he has broken Jackie Stewarts record, of finishing the first seven Grand Prix of the season.
